Merregnon
Merregnon Soundtrack Vol. 1 - CD Review:Cover / Track list:
Welcome to Merregnon:
Far above, in the still heights of Merregnon lives a young man called Gallahadt. Selina is a beautiful young lady and the girl of his dreams. One day a dragon captured Selina and the day has come for Gallahadt, to go and rescue his beloved girl. A dangerous journey begins - a journey where Gallahadt meets evil creatures until he recognizes, that he is a chosen one. He has the power to defeat the dragons, but nothing is as it seems. The evil is not the dragon, but a person who is very familiar to Gallahadt...

This is the romantic and thrilling story of Merregnon and you're welcome to take part of it. Join a wonderful fantasy trip to a beautiful land full of love, magic and danger. Based on orchestral compositions by some of the most famous musicians from the demo scene and computer games industry, a movie alike soundtrack was created, which could be the music for the forth coming remake of the "Lord of the Rings" saga. Directed by Thomas Boecker and Fabian Del Priore, an impressive project was brought to life. Something what the scene has never seen before.

The Music:
Merregnon is a fully orchestral soundtrack which perfectly catches the atmosphere of the various story parts. Bombastic melodic songs are guiding the listener through beautiful landscapes, describing the lucky moments in the life of Gallahadt, while the little hairs in your neck will set up themselves by listening to the dark, powerful and dangerous rhythms.

Everything sounds so clear and is so well arranged. It's a big surprise that all tunes are fitting perfectly together, because all musicians normally have their own music styles. Merregnon is a complex musical production where everything is in harmony. There's not one (!) song, which isn't worth listening. Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams couldn't have better caught the atmosphere of this world.

The Artists:
Main composer of Merregnon is Fabian Del Priore, who has composed the soundtrack for the helicopter-action-game "Extreme Assault" together with the legendary Chris Huelsbeck. His end-song "Above the clouds of Merregnon" is one of the highlights of this album. Even Chris Huelsbeck has contributed to this project, but "only" with a bonus track: A medley of the music to a short movie, which he has composed some time ago.

Allister Brimble is probably the most respected game musician in the UK. His music for games like "Superfrog" or "Project-X" is unforgotten. He has entered a new world of composing music with his work for Merregnon. It sounds completely different to his older stuff - a very positive attempt! Another famous music artist is Olof Gustafsson. Pinball lovers will remember him for the great music for games like "Pinball Fantasies". We haven't heard any music in orchestral style from him before, but he's THE surprise of the whole album!

Rudolf Stember has already shown his talent for symphonic tunes with the soundtrack for the game "Realms of Arkania" (Das schwarze Auge), so it's not a surprise that his music is a well-being benefit to this project. Jogeir Liljedahl is one of the best known musicians from the demo scene. In 1999 he has released his first CD-album "The Wanderer" and now he has made another step forward in his musical career. With Track Nr. 3 "Village in the Mountains" he has finally said good-bye to his old style and amazes with one of the most melodic tracks on this CD.

Jonne "Purple Motion" Valtonen and Gustaf "Lizardking" Grefberg are originally coming from the demo scene, too, but working now for games companies. These companies must be very lucky for having two of the best musicians from the scene for their projects. All four songs which were composed by these two guys are a celebration for the ears.

Newcomers in the music industry are Jason Chong and Markus Holler. Markus is the musician behind the soon coming Amiga game "Tales of Tamar". Many people have already said how good his music for this game is, but listen to Merregnon! His music for this soundtrack is even better! I'm sure that we'll hear much more from Jason Chong in the near future, too. His talent is amazing and "Attack of the Surgids" is one of the best arranged songs on the whole album.

More about Merregnon:
The people behind Merregnon have also spent lots of time and effort in creating a nice booklet. On 24 noble designed pages you'll be able to read the story of Merregnon and get some more info. The pages are illustrated with nice motives. Everything looks great.

On the Merregnon website you can download some samples from this soundtrack, too, as well as new tunes from other musicians like Scorpik or Oddjob, which are inspired by Merregnon.

Final words:
Most people say that Audiophonik - music for the scene generation is the best scene sampler. It's hard to compare Audiophonik to Merregnon, because the Audiophonik CD contains electronic music, while Merregnon is an orchestral piece of music art. Since the release of Merregnon, Audiophonik has lost its place on the top of the CD charts. Merregnon sounds so friendly, so warm, so bombastic, so thrilling and doesn't contain one bad track - it's the new number one. A must have for everyone who likes orchestral music or is a movie soundtrack fan in general.
