| Back to the Roots - MONSTER CHRISTMAS UPDATE 2001! |
Hello and welcome to the biggest update in the history of Back to the Roots!
We are proud to announce that Back to the Roots is no longer a two person maintained site, and with this update we extended our team a bit, as the first step to a community driven project.
Bernd Gmeineder, maintainer of the huge site Ami Sector One (ASO) decided to join his entire site content into the BTTR archive! This covers many licenses for commercial software, hundreds of freeware games, demos, advert and cover scans, screenshots and more! Read the full story here.
Peter Levan, maintainer of Emerald Web (EW), formerly hosted by ASO, subsequently decided to join his entire Emeral Mines and Boulderdash clones collection into the BTTR archive. This covers hundreds of additional games with screenshots and more!
Codetapper, recently took over the discontinued Sweet Cheater by Keith Krellwitz, a collection of more than 1100 cheats, which you might know from Aminet. We converted Sweet Cheater into a BTTR compatible format, so we have all cheats online here now. A release version is in progress.
Warlock, our hardware and connectivity man, is responsible for the fact that we now have a dedicated server at NVG.org, and he does a hell of a good job in keeping everything stable and up to date, while giving us all freedom one could have to grow a site like this without advertising.
Bobic and Hippie2000 want to thank the new members for joining the team and for choosing cooperation instead of competition. That's more than a christmas present for us.
There are more members in the queue, we just didn't manage to integrate more in one month. We all together will do arbitary tasks at BTTR in future, so don't be afraid to get bored here ;-) |
| Back to the Roots - NEW SERVICES! |
You might have noticed short off times in the last weeks, this was due to server maintanance, as we ran out of harddisk space. Bobic and Hippie2000 put together their christmas money and bought some new harddisks and more RAM. Warlock was so kind and did the physical work, and upgraded the OS in one go. Now we are able to offer you more services here. These update's highlights are:
Aminet full mirror: We now mirror all files of Aminet at aminet.back2roots.org. That's more than 22GB of Amiga software, with readme's totalling 140.000 files. The Aminet mirror is accessible via HTTP and FTP. An upload gateway will be implemented as well in future.
Anonymous FTP server: We now run an FTP server at ftp.back2roots.org with upload and download facilities. This is no warez exchange server, all uploads are sorted into section directories and are then forwarded to the apropriate section maintainers to be included in a future update.
Email uploads: This is not the prefered way, but if you live in a country with a bad connection to us you may send us files as attachments to <ask us to avoid spam>. Please talk with us before you send or upload masses. Don't upload material from other sites unless it's freely distributable. |

| Well, after all these announcements, now finally the 'usual' highlights lists of this update:
Games: As you could imagine for such a massive sites join, we have a huge amount of new games for the gaming freaks. This time more than 500 games, extending our legal games collection to exactly 1200 games!!!
Besides 250 Emeral Mines and Boulderdash clones from Emerald Web, our ADF-games section now contains lots of new games from Ami Sector One which have written Amiga history: Simulation fanatics can enjoy Airbus A-320, Armour Geddon, or Blue Max. Material Arts lovers should be pleased by playing Chambers of Shaolin or Karate Kid II. Lethal Xcess is one of the best shoot'em up games and features brilliant music composed by the legendary Jochen Hippel! Obsession Pinball is a well done pinball simulation, while trading simulation fans should get tears in their eyes when they hear the name Ports of Call. Mind game lovers should take a closer look at the Skweek games. Also many games from the italian software company Simulmondo and Mirage from Poland are waiting to be downloaded.
Amiga freaks who like to play games from their harddisk can download HD versions of Subwar 2050, Ports of Call, Lethal Xcess, Pinball Dreams, R-Type, Car-Vup or Carrier Command plus many other files. Please check the games section carefully because there's so much new stuff for you to explore this time, we can't name them all here.
Demos: Watching Demos is always a pleasure, so this update is full of impressive nostalgic and new demoscene productions.
This update's AGA only demos are coming from Freezers (Lech), Embassy (Thrilled), Essence (Crazy, Sexy, Cool), Mystic (Fear), Razor 1911 (Memorial Songs 2), Tulou (Life) and many others. More than 80 ECS demos have been included from Bernd's Ami Sector One archive: Enjoy demos, intros and diskmags from e.g. Andromeda (Multica), The Silents (Ice), LSD (Grapevine), Kefrens (Guardian Dragon) and many many others.
Now some mind candy for the PC demos lovers. Addict released an excellent music disk called Radio Aux. The Dialogos'01 winner demo De Profundis from Kolor is online as well as the funny intro FR-013: Flybye from Farbrausch. That's not all because productions from Haujobb, Unik, Fairlight and others have been included, too.
Music: Getting bored while downloading so many games and demos from BTTR? Why not listening to some cool music from the demoscene? This time we offer 20 new funny Chip-Music composed by musicians like 4-mat, Beek or Padre Vincenzo. More tracked music is coming from Laxity, Nitro, Pinion, Jazzcat and the unforgettable Purple Motion. The winner tune of the multichannel compo at Dialogos'01 "Modular Sky" by DHG is available, too. Our mod of the month was composed by Henrik Jose, is called "Saftkalas" and should give you the right mood for having a really great X-mas.
Pics: Only a few new game-pics have been added this time, but instead here's a X-mas present for the gfx lovers: Our Cover-Scans section got extended with hires box and advert scans of Amiga Software, another excellent part of the Ami Sector One project. At the moment there's not much online in this section, just nearly 500 scans - hehe - enjoy them!
Disks: We created a new main section in the tree, called Disks, where we start collecting disk compilations and disk series from now on. This time we added more than 100 disks from the ASO collection. The highlights are the entire series of the LSD Docs disks, the LSD Sprint disks, the Loons Docs disks and some of the LSD Trainers disks. This is a huge resource of cheats, hints, maps, walkthroughs and much more.
Docs: Our Docs section has been splitted into two sub categories, Reviews, where you find all CD and Maker reviews we collected here in the past, and the brand new Cheats section, where we added more than 1100 cheats from the legendary Sweet Cheater project, now maintained my Codetapper. There's also a search engine, so you can search for cheats in our Docs directory.
Shameless plugs 2001: This year, about 10 million pages have been viewed at BTTR, 3 million files have been downloaded and 3 Terabytes of data have been delivered into the net! Oh yes, the Amiga is sooo dead ;-)
We wish you all a merry X-Mas and a damn good time! Yours Back to the Roots team. | Webdir - 18 new links
