Andrew Braybrook and Steve Turner are two legendary programmers of games for 8-bit and 16-bit computer systems, which they've created under the Graftgold label. Hits like Uridium, Paradroid or Fire and Ice were created by their magic hands and have given non-computer-users a reason, for finally buying one of this machines.
Uridium is a fast paced topview shoot'em up game, probably one of the fastest shoot'em ups of all time. It was originally developed for 8-bit computers like the C-64 or Spectrum. The sequel Uridium 2 was even better than the original. It came out for the Amiga only and was created in 1992 by Andrew Braybrook, who's meanwhile out of the business and is working for an insurance company today. Also Paradroid is a true classic. An action/strategy mixture where you had to take control over different robots. The sequel Paradroid '90 is available for Amiga.
My all time favourite game from Graftgold is the cute jump'n Run game Fire and Ice. The adventures of "Cool Coyote" featured some of the most stunning graphics, which A500 users have ever seen in their life. Also the soundtrack, composed by Jason Page, was excellent. Especially the main track will make your feet tapping to the rhythm of the music still today. Andrew Braybrook was also responsible for bringing the very addictive platform game Rainbow Islands from the coin-op machines onto the computer screens. For many people the Amiga version of this genious game is still the best version ever made.
Graftgold released many more games for the Amiga and all are worth playing. Realms (strategy), Nipper versus the Kats (platform) or Virocop, a cool isometric action game, which was released in 1995 and which was the last Amiga product from them. Even Empire Soccer, which was published by Empire, was created by the Graftgold team.
In the year 2000 the company Jester Interactive acquired the rights for all games from Graftgold. They're planning to re-relaese those milestones in the computer history; games like "Paradroid" or "Fire and Ice" again for todays computer systems and videogame consoles somehow in the near future. Of course the new versions will make use of todays state of the art hardware. It will be interesting to see how good looking "Cool Coyote", the main character in "Fire and Ice" will look in the 3d dimension; or how good the classic "Paradroid" concept will maybe work in a Tomb Raider alike perspective. Probably we're all very curious to see, what Jester Interactive will make out of this great license.
Jester Interactive is active in the computer business since 1998. It's really interesting to see, that they've never released a game till early 2001. They've only made some very successful music programs called Music (available for the Playstation console) and Music 2000 (for PSX and PC) yet. Some of the legendary Amiga musicians like Mike Clarke or Tim Wright were responsible for making this easy to use, but very powerful music creation tool to such a big success. | Fire and Ice
