Mark Sibly is a very skilled programmer who even coded his own Basic language. It is called Blitz Basic and started as an Amiga program. Since Blitz Basic had many essential features which the other wellknown Basic for the Amiga Amos did not have and its very easy learnability it soon became a great success. Virtually everybody can learn it if you have the time to deal with the commands and go through the numerous example codes which come with the program. The power of Blitz Basic can also be proved since it was not only used by many private programmers but also in some commercial productions. Some games which were partly or completely written in Blitz include Gloom, Skidmarks and even the very first version of the bestseller Worms was written in Blitz Basic. The success of Blitz Basic rose when the new versions 2.x appeared. These new wonderpieces had support for the AGA chipset and a far better debugger.
Since Blitz Basic was and is still so successful on the Amiga there are of course many third party packs like MUI support. Check out Aminet if you are interested. A while ago Blitz Basic for the Amiga became freeware but had to be renamed to AmiBlitz because of licence agreements. Visit the official AmiBlitz Site if you are seriously interested and discuss with other Blitz developers. The versions you can get here on Back to the Roots are the original ones which were also sold by Amiga dealers.
While Mark Sibly is no longer improving the Amiga version he is now working very hard on Blitz Basic PC and Blitz Basic 3D (of course also for the PC). Both programms are a dream for hobby programmers and there is a very strong community which supports it.
If you are now stuck whether you should use Amos or Blitz Basic on your Amiga or Amiga emulator we suggest to try both programms. It will finally depend on what you expect from a Basic language which program you will use. | Blitz Basic 2.0
