| Martyn - Musician Review (May 2000): | Projects: |
Mattias Sundling alias Martyn who comes from Sweden, hasn't released so many modules yet, like some other scene musicians, but only quality ones. He has won the Mekka Symposium 2k-1 multichannel music competition with his fantastic dance song You and me, which he composed together with his friend Evade.
Summerland is another winning tune from Martyn - again in dance style while he has made some excellent steps into the beautiful world of chip tunes with his song Sommarflickor. But I want to give the keyboard now over to Martyn himself, because he want to tell you, how he has started in the scene and how he started with composing music. Martyn - your turn :)
Ok .. Hmm, where should i start? :) To make it easy on you, this is how it all started * Drums please * :
Sometime back in 1985/86 my father bought (me) a c64. The two of us got along very well (the 64 and I) and we spent lots of time with each other, sotospeak. :) I used to think that the music in some of those games was really excellent, but since I was "just a kid" back then, I really didnt care that much to find out who had composed it or how it was done.
I didnt find out about Rob Hubbard and Martin Galway among others, until the early 90's. As time went by, I grew older and so did my dear c64. *Sniff*
How did i get into the demoscene then? Well ..
One cold afternoon in the winter of 1989 i visited this kid (Hi André Aka Mempheria) who recently had moved in next to me. At that time I was pretty much in love with my c64 and didnt care much when he told me that he had a computer named Amiga 500. Anyhow, when he showed me some demos and played me a couple of modules, I was amazed! When I left his house five or six hours later after having listened to every module and watched every demo he had, I knew that I had to get a machine likes that aswell.
I didnt take long to convince my parents that a A500 was good for my schoolwork. A week or so after my first contact with the A500 I had one standing on my desk. :)
For the first months i did nothing but fool around with Soundtracker, composing silly music and giving everyone a good laugh when they heard my awful music. Eventually I got better, but I was still a crappy musican. :)
Although I was very interested in the scene and followed every move the guys in TRSI, Silents, Phenomena, Rebels etc did, I never joined any group, nor did I send my music to other musicans. Today I feel very bad about that fact that since most of my old songs now have vanished forever.
In 1993 I quit the Amiga-scene. Instead I Focused on the Pc-scene which I had been keeping a eye on since 1991 when things started happening on that platform.
When I started tracking on the pc back in 1992 I used spacepigs tracker, which I sadly cant remember the name, perhaps it was spacepigs tracker even. :) When Ft2 was released i started using it, and since mr.h and the loot lived was living next to me it came quite natural to me. :)
After that much of other things has happened, but it´s not fun .. yet. Perhaps in a few years or so it will be. :)
